On September 26th in Lee’s Summit (Kansas City), we are hosting our second-annual Shootout for Soldiers-Kansas City Lacrosse AND Rugby Festival. The Army Lacrosse Alumni and the K State Men’s Lacrosse Association are building on last year’s enormous success and we’re less than 10 days out. We've added Rugby as well.
SFS is more than a sports event—it is a movement that uses the games we love to support American Veterans, to strengthen the bond between civilians and service members, and to prevent the silent battles of mental health crises too many Veterans face. Of particular note, 2026 brings a world-class partner and local Veteran-Support Non-profit called The Battle Within , who helps Veterans and First Responders navigate and conquer the weight of PTS. I am humbled to serve as Co-Director with my great friend Curt Thurman again this year.
There is a direct link to USMA 88: 1LT Donnie Tillar (Co A-1), Army Lacrosse, Army Aviator, First Infantry Division, lost in Operation Desert Storm, who is also Kansas State University’s first head lacrosse coach. K State continues to honor him with imbedded leadership and character traits firmly ingrained in their lacrosse program. Given the Fort Riley/K State relationship and proximity to KC, it makes sense for both lacrosse associations to bring a Shootout event to Kansas City. It makes even more sense to go a second year and improve on our inaugural success.
None of that happened magically. You—my amazing family and friends—were and remain a huge part of our goals and success. As you know Donnie Tillar and his legacy, as you know Army and K State Lacrosse AND Rugby, as you know military and first responders who still battle long after they’ve left the unit, then you know. This is our focus for 2026.
Our Fund-raising goal in 2025 was $10,000. We grossed close to $56,000. This year we are aiming for $50,000; who knows where we’ll land. Portions of those funds will go to The Battle Within not only for their Veteran and First Responders care and programs, but also for equine therapy expenses, support and therapy dog/owner training, and paying for professional counselors who work with our selfless servants. Their track record is pretty impressive.

It’s all about community and communities are our constants.
Too many of us know through our own experience what happens when isolation and loneliness set in. No one should ever feel left out or forgotten, especially those who do so much for others. Let’s reconnect with those like us through a great day of competitive sports, homage, and reflection. Reconnection starts now.
